How Do You Seek First The Kingdom Of Heaven

  • Seek First The KingdomSeek First The Kingdom

This was the question asked here this morning; “How do you seek first the kingdom of heaven?”  It’s an easy thing to say; “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God“; but not so easy to understand, and harder still to put into practice!  It is a companion verse to Psalm 1: Verse 2, that says;”But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night“.

  • Simple Dialog with God

My understanding of this text is based on this assumption: That I can, and do, have constant dialog with God [How Do I Pray] as I perform my daily routines. This being so, it is not so hard to consult with God about everything I do. Prayer, which is no more than conversation with God, need not always be formal, but can be frequent simple [mental] communion with Him, and in this way, it is quite easy to get His guidance on anything we might feel led to do, and as we do it, we will indeed “seek first His Kingdom“. This is exactly what is meant by the expression to be led by the Spirit of God.

  • Developing Mind Patterns.

If we cultivate the habit of constantly referring everything we do to Him, then it will become a habit  of mind, a behavioural pattern that will shape our lives and eventually fulfill the two texts above that speak about seeking first the Kingdom of Heaven, and meditating on His law both by day and by night. You too then, can be led by the Spirit of God.

  • The Payoff

Why bother, you might ask?. I’m so glad you asked this question, because it goes to the root of our entire Christian motivation. Check out Psalm 1 “1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” where in Verse 3 it describes the life style of a person who does this – Wow! This is some promise, where you are guaranteed that everything you do will prosper!  And again in the other scripture from Matthew 6: “25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. where the promise is that all these things [food, clothing, etc] will be added unto us. Wow again!

  • Hallelujah Country

It is perfectly splendid to have everything you do prospering and to have “all these things” added unto you;” but the real pay-off, the “double whammy”, comes in the side effect of your obedience, the fact that you will be living in near perfect obedience, and thereby living a wholly fulfilled Christian live. Hallelujah!  You will in reality, be led by the Spirit of God! Hallelujah again!

  1. Apart from existing world, somebody believes there would have another world after our death. That is heaven. But it is not so easy to enter into heaven based on the moral stories. We can’t get into the heaven directly at the single event. It is the process inwhich we should be practiced in this existing world itself. The one and only way is have conversation with god for our moral discipline life. That is what every religion expresses.

You said; “The one and only way is have conversation with God”. You are right on the button with that, it is that daily [constant] prayer dialog with God that will show us how to discern His will and be truly obedient.

When you say; “It is all about put into practice”; you have nailed it right there. We only need to get the concept of ‘little and often’ with our talking to God, and the practise of seeking first the Kingdom of Heaven will become easy and natural for us. It is one of those synergystic things: “The more you do it, the better you get, the greater the reward, the easier it is to do!

  3. the kingdom of heaven IS near yet my family dose not permit me to preach His kingdom based on my age or rather they think that I am nuts.. how do I do this without my family scoffing at me about it?

    1. Hi Kelly –

It is very difficult to go against your family. My instinct is to advise you to preach silently by deed and attitude, and to pray that they will come to see you are really serious about what you believe.

    2. Romans 1:16-17 KJV

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

  4. @Doris I think like you the Kingdom of God is within you. You might go to church every Sunday, but if you talk to the God and pray and try to be a good person then you will be blessed and good things may happen.

  5. In Genises God gave man dominion over earth. His intention was to not bring man to Heaven per se, but to bring the culture of heaven to earth. Th Kindom of Heaven, God as the King. He was intending to colonize earth with ma and man to dominate using heavens culture. Adam messed thatup and allowed sn to enter , but God never goes back on hisword once spoken and man was still sent to dominate the earth. He still had a mission of living and acting in a Heavenly manner. Man was to influence man to live a rightous life. To seek the Kingdom here on earth.

      1. Excellent comment on man created to populate and acculturate earth with heaven! Makes sense of many Scriptures like Ps 132.13-16 et al
And why the Sofm came and did it all on earth .
        New heaven and earth!
Thy Kingdom come-on earth as in heaven.
        Thanks for that insight!

  6. Right one, Rhys! Until now, I didn’t see the connection of Psalms 1 and Matthew 6. HOWEVER, your explanation affirms the Spirit directing me to Psalms 1 recently and later reminding me about seeking God’s Kingdom.

Seeking His Kingdom involves seeking His Will FIRST, then complying with His guidance in accordance with what is [right] ous behavior and motivation.

Thank you, Rhys. Peace and Blessings…rc

  7. I just have a little testimony about this “Seeking first God’s Kingdom”. 3years ago,I was working with a big company that has good compensation. Although I have money, and material things I can’t find myself happy and satisfied. I could always feel the emptiness like something’s lacking and nothing can fill it up. That time I was inactive in the church and doesn’t even have time to pray before and after sleeping out of my tiredness.I asked myself,”why can’t I be happy though I have everything I need(material needs)?”Then one time as I was riding a vehicle, one big truck passed by before me and has this BIG letters: MATT 6:33, I believed it was God’s message for me but I’m not familiar with the verse that time since I don’t read bible those days.So I asked my pastor about the message and there I found out that the reason why I can’t be happy and contented was because I didn’t seek God and His will, I usually do it on my own.
